Vision and Values
Our School Vision
Our School Vision is:
"Live life in all its fullness" Mark 10:10
Working, Learning and Growing together
Our values
We have 6 school Christian values which we explore, discuss and teach over the academic year. These values were decided in consultation with parents, children, staff and our School Forum. Each term one value is explored in depth through our collective worship, class and visitor worship. Each value is linked to a Bible verse and these are displayed around the school. Our Christian values underpin school life at St Luke’s and especially our behaviour and relationships policy.
Trust
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart" Proverbs 3:5-6
Friendship
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”. John 15: 13
Courage
“Be strong and of good courage” Deuteronomy 3:16
Perseverance
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up”. Galatians 6:9
Respect
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” Matthew 7:12
Compassion
"Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience" Colossians 3.2
British Values
In addition to these values we uphold and teach pupils about the British Values which are defined as:
- Respect
- Democracy
- Rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.
These British Values are taught through delivering a broad and balanced curriculum and through how we run our school. The school takes opportunities to actively promote British Values through our daily assemblies and whole school systems and structures.
Respect
Respect is one of our core values in our school and this value determines how we behave within our school. We encourage our children to respect themselves, their friends and peers and adults and this value is used regularly in discussions with all stakeholders. On a termly basis we promote anti-bullying and our school council and anti-bullying ambassadors are involved in ensuring that the child’s voice is heard. We respect other cultures and countries through being responsive to current affairs including raising money for different charities.
Democracy
Democracy is important within our school, children have the opportunity to have their voices heard through our School Council. Our house system also encourages pupils to be elected as house captains and they support their houses in a variety of events including sports day and raising money for the school. The children work together on specific points which involve them in, for example, our caring contract being designed and signed by all pupils and staff and being displayed in every classroom. Our curriculum also enables us to teach democracy and its history e.g. Guy Fawkes and the Magna Carta in an age appropriate way.
The rule of law
The importance of laws and rules, whether they are those that govern the class, the school or country, are consistently reinforced daily. Our behaviour policy is clear and children are given warnings before a consequence is given, discussions are had with children to ensure they understand how they haven’t followed the school’s policy. Our recognition system enables pupils to be recognised for following the school’s values and promotes positive behaviour. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws and the responsibilities we have. We welcome visits from different authorities e.g. police and fire service and current events assist us in reinforcing this message.
Individual liberty
Pupils are actively encouraged to make choices at our school through our supportive and safe environment. As a school we ensure we provide clear boundaries for our children to be able to make choices safely through our curriculum and our daily life. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and how to exercise these safely through our e-safety teaching, safeguarding sessions and PSHE. Pupils are given the freedom to make choices regarding their learning and we encourage pupils to choose their level of work and demonstrate independence in their work.
Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
We are an inclusive school of all faiths and none, as a school we promote our Christian values however we ensure that we teach different religions through our RE teaching, following the agreed syllabus. We teach the children the similarities and differences between religions and their beliefs and ensure that pupils foster mutual respect for them. We encourage visitors from other faiths to talk to the children and we ensure that our collective worship involves key festivals from other religions.
Our teaching of British Values is explicit throughout all our curriculum areas and in the daily life of our school. We respond to current affairs and events to ensure that our pupils develop a secure understanding of British Values and how they will impact on their lives
